if we see according to bio point of view

then sodium has high binding efficiency with water and also capable of carrying more water.
that is why, their is presence of sodium ions in the nephron of kidney at DCT , which is used to for reabsorpthion.
this was it's main function but it is also used for in Na-K pump for the exchange of ions
