The general equation for the reaction of a primary alcohol with SOCl₂ is as follows:

R-OH+SOCl_2 \ - > R-Cl+SO_2+HCl

Here R-OH is the primary alcohol. The reaction takes place in the presence of pyridine. This process is also called Darzen's process.

The by-products are hydrochloric acid, sulfur dioxide, and chloride of R ( alkyl chloride). Conversion of alcohol to alkyl halides does a substitution reaction with the SN₂ mechanism.
