General features of of phylum platyhelminthes (flatworms) are :
- Flatworms are the simplest worms or animals without legs.
- These are found mostly in Marine and freshwater or in the bodies of higher animals as parasites feeding on them.
- The body is thin and flattened or leaf-like or ribbon-like. It is bilaterally symmetrical, that is, it can be divided into two identical halves only through one plane.
- They have only one opening through which they take in food and get rid of wastes.
- Examples of platyhelminthes are tapeworms that live in intestine of humans and cattle, Planaria and Liver Fluke.
The general features of phylum aschelminthes (roundworms) are :
- Roundworms are found in freshwater, marine or terrestrial environment.
- Their body is cylindrical narrow and segmented ( smooth surface ) and bilaterally symmetrical.
- They heaven opening called mouth through which the food is pulled in and crushed. Another opening called anus is present near the tip of the body.
- Some wrong ones such as Filarial worms are thread-like while others such as hookworm are more rounded.
- Many of these are parasites that live in the intestine of humans or other big animals. In the intestine, they reproduce sexually by forming eggs.
- Examples of nematodes pinworms, Ascaris and Whipworms.
