Gladiolus takes 110-120 days to produce spikes. While harvesting atleast 4 basal leaves should be retained on the plant to ensure proper development of corms and cormels.

The harvesting stages of Gladiolus:

  • The flower stalk is cut in the fresh morning or at night but not while the heat of the day.
  • By using a sharpened knife they bring a 'bucket of lukewarm water' to the flower bed.
  • The 'one or two open flowers' were cut stalks, the rest of the 'buds will open' after you 'put them in a vase'.
  • the stalks are Cut diagonally through, then placed them in the bucket.
  • Later at least four leaves on the plant in the ground if you want to re-use the corms.
  • The 'bucket is placed with the flowers' in a 'cool dark place' for a few hours before 'arranging them in a vase'.
  • The 'lower fading flowers' and 1 inch cut off the 'bottom of each flower stalk' every few days.
