Primary reason is to give predictability to all traveling on the road.
Starting with self. When we have rules, we can predict how we are going to drive on said roads. Even when we violate those rules, we tend to pay a bit more attention to how breaking the rules may impact our safety and our driving.
Now add other drivers. When we know they are following the same rules, we know how to react and proceed in a safe manner. They use a turn signal to indicate a lane change, we are able to adjust our speed or distance to ensure we continue on a safe path.
Take the opposite, you’re in tight traffic and the person on your right moves into your lane without signal. As a driver you may not be ready for this and panic ever so slightly, tapping the breaks a bit harder than normal. The gent behind you, following too close (not obeying the rules either) ends up hitting you from behind.
Two wrongs don’t make a right. In the US, we hear over and over, it’s the difference in speed that causes accidents on the freeway. I disagree with this adamantly. If you’ve ever driven on the Autobahn in Germany there are many times the speed difference between two lanes approaches 80 to 100 mph and yet they have fewer accidents. It’s lane discipline which brings about predictability. They don’t follow too close. They don’t pass on the right. Then don’t “hang out” in the passing lane. In essence they have more predictability to driving than we do, thus fewer accidents. They follow the rules.
They also have a saying “In every policeman is a little German and inside of every German is a little policeman”.
Hope it'll help you....
Thank you.....
