Peristalsis can be defined as a process by which the food gets transported from the oesophagus to the stomach by the rhythmic waves of contractions and relaxations.

In fact, these peristaltic movements occur in the whole digestive system which helps in the smooth movement of food.

The food goes down through the tube in a regulated manner so that it can be processed properly in each part of the digestive system.
