Why do we need to study?

We study so that we can learn about ourselves and others, and the world around us. We could learn without studying and going to school, but if we did that, we would waste a lot of time rediscovering knowledge that is already known and written down in books or available on Wikipedia or Google. This holds true whether we are living in the woods or working in Silicone Valley.

Let's say you grew up in the city and one day, you decided that you want to "live off the Grid" entirely on your own, away from society. So you take the bus as far north as it goes in Alaska, and hitch hike for a while and finally walk. But it is cold and you are hungry, and you have blisters on your feet.
