Sclerenchyma is a plant tissue providing mechanical stiffness and strength.The cell walls of sclerenchyma have thickened secondary layers made from cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. The stiffness of sclerenchyma depends on the orientation of cellulose and varies widely under developmental control.
