Conditions for the linear combination of atomic orbitals :-

1) The combining atomic orbitals must have same or nearly same energy this means 1S orbital can combine only with 1S orbital but not with 2S orbital

2) The orbitals must have same symmetry about the molecular axis this means to \mathsf{2P_{x}} combines only with \mathsf{2P_{x}} but not \mathsf{2P_{z}}

3) The orbitals combining must overlap to the maximum extent. Greater the overlap greater will be the electron density between the nuclei
