Writing the scientific names of plants and animals follows certain guidelines known as the binomial nomenclature or scientific nomenclature:

i) The genus name is written first followed by the ‘species name’.

ii) The ‘genus name’ starts with a capital letter and is always underlined or italicized.

iii) The species name starts with a small letter and is always underlined or italicized.

iv) While writing a scientific name in short form, the genus is the first capital letter followed by a fullstop, a space and then the species name.

Example of binomial nomenclature: Homo sapiens is the ‘scientific name’ of humans. In short form it can be written as H. sapiens.
