When the poet was at the very stage where he was asked to choose one career option b/w farming and poetry he was extremely confused,the two roads stand for these career options. The poet's family had a background of farming so he could opt for the same and lead a simple and usual life , the less adventurous road was this one. Or, he could choose poetry ,this was quite risky as he wasn't sure that whether he'll be able to succeed in this field or not , the adventurous road was this one .
The poet could see that farming i.e. the simple road's path was trodden and this showed that many people had chosen that one ,however , being an adventurous guy he opted for the less chosen and adventurous one(poetry) as it sounded more promising to him and that had made all the difference.
