Ionic bond, also called electrovalent bond, type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. Such a bond forms when the valence (outermost) electrons of one atom are transferred permanently to another atom.
When bonded to a highly electropositive element like an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, hydrogen acts as a sort of pseudo-halide where it accepts an electron and becomes negatively charged. This hydride anion is then electrostatically attracted to its respective cation and forms an ionic bond.
Four types of compounds:-
- molecules held together by covalent bonds.
- ionic compounds held together by ionic bonds.
- intermetallic compounds held together by metallic bonds.
- certain complexes held together by coordinate covalent bonds.
