Ionic bond, also called electrovalent bond, type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. Such a bond forms when the valence (outermost) electrons of one atom are transferred permanently to another atom.

When bonded to a highly electropositive element like an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, hydrogen acts as a sort of pseudo-halide where it accepts an electron and becomes negatively charged. This hydride anion is then electrostatically attracted to its respective cation and forms an ionic bond.

Four types of compounds:-

  1. molecules held together by covalent bonds.
  2. ionic compounds held together by ionic bonds.
  3. intermetallic compounds held together by metallic bonds.
  4. certain complexes held together by coordinate covalent bonds.
