Explanation:

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is passed through an acidified solution of potassium permagnate (KMnO4) which is purple in colour.On doing so, sulphur dioxide being a strong reducing agent ,reduces the purple coloured solution to form a  colourless solution .

2KMnO4+5SO2+2H2O→K2SO4+2MnSO4+2H2SO4
