The major limitations of Newlands' law of octaves were : (i) It was applicable to only lighter elements having atomic masses upto 40 u, i.e., upto calcium. ... But later on several new elements were discovered whose properties did not fit into the law of octaves.

  1. The law of octaves was applicable only uptu calcium as after calcium every 8th element did not posses the properties similar to that of first.
  2. Newland assumed that only 56 elements existed in the nature and no more elements would be discover.But later,several new elements were discovered.
  3. The newly discovered elements were not fitting into the law of octaves,In order to fit them He adjusted two elements in the same slot.
  4. Newland also put some unlike elements in the same note. Cobalt and Nickel are in the same slot and these are in the same column as Fluorine,Chlorine and Bromine which have very different properties than these elements.
  5. Iron ,resemble Cobalt and Nickel in properties ,has been placed far away from these elements.
  6. Newland law of Octaves worked with the lighter elements only.
