Write the limitations of the hydrogen electrode method

\huge{\pink{\boxed{\pink{\underline{\gray{\mathscr{Answer}}}}}}}

The limitations of the hydrogen electrode method are :

  • If the solution contains an oxidising agent, this meathod cannot be used

  • The meathod is not applicable if the solution cotains ions of noble metals like Cu, Ag, Au etc

  • In presence of unsaturated compounds this method does not give correct results

Explanation:

Limitations of standard hydrogen electrode are :

1) It is very difficult to assemble the apparatus. 2) It is difficult to maintain the pressure of H2 gas of 1 atm throughout and also the concentration of H+ ion of 1 M. 3) H2 electrode cannot be used in presence of oxidising agent.

Disadvantages of Standard Hydrogen Electrode (S.H.E.):

It is not convenient to assemble the apparatus. It is difficult to maintain the pressure of hydrogen gas and concentration of HCl. It is difficult to get pure, dry hydrogen gas and prepare ideal platinised platinum plate.
