Urban poverty in India is over 25 percent; close to 81 million people in urban areas live below the poverty line. In India, the rural poor outnumber the urban poor. In the next decade urbanisation in India is set to reach 50 per cent.
This means that they buy goods and services which enhance socio-economic status and which are not affordable to the poor. The majority of the people are, on the other hand, not able to fulfil their minimum needs.
