The main aim of classifying elements are it helps to study elements properly and thoroughly. Also as same properties elements are placed together so classifying help us in studying general properties of elements also their characteristic properties can also be studied .

It also help us in studying the relation between different elements their similarities and differences.

Basic property of elements used in development of modern periodic table is atomic number that is elements are classified according to their increasing atomic numbers and elements with similar electronic configurations are placed together.

The modern atomic law states that "the physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers." The modern periodic table accepts that atomic number and not atomic weight fundamental property of elements.

Metals are present on the left hand side of modern periodic table and are placed in group 1 and group 2 known as alkali metals and alkaline earth metals respectively.

On the other hand non metals are present on left hand side of periodic table generally from group 13 to group 17.

Metalloids are placed between group 3 to group 12 between metals and non metals and are indicated by zig zag line. There are only 5 metalloids also known as semimetals namely germanium, silicon, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium.
