Causes of revolt of 1857 in India are classified into:
Commercial Causes:-
- There was dissatisfaction among the peasant and zamindar communities due to heavy tax and strict rules for revenue collection.
- A large number of soldiers had relations with these farmers and hence they were also affected by the suffering of the farmers.
- Many of these peasants were unable to meet the tax demand of the British Government and were unable to repay the debt of the moneylenders, which in the end, it forced them to lose their ancestral land.
Social Causes:-
- In 1850, the colonial government changed the succession law of the Hindus and now a Hindu adopting Kishan religion could be entitled to the property of his ancestors.
- So, there was anger among the large section of the society about western civilization of India.
- Apart from this, People felt that the British government wanted to make Indian people Christian. Like in Indian society, dissatisfaction arose in the minds of some of the centuries-old practices such as the practice of sati.
Political reasons:-
- The final expansion of British territory in India took place during the rule of Dalhousie. Dalhousie announced in 1849 that the successors of Bahadur Shah II would have to leave the Red Fort.
- And when Dalhousie tried to apply the principle of lapse on Karauli of Rajasthan, his decision was nullified by the Court.

❶ Political and Administrative Reason :-
- The expansionist and annexationist policies of the British power in India made all the Muslim look with suspicion and develop hatred towards the British power in India.
❷ Economic Causes :-
- Added to political and administrative disturb for the British East India company, the economic policies of the British resulted in improverishing all the segment of the Indian society except a handful of collaborators among the Indian.
❸ Social and Religious Causes :-
- Added to the political and administrative distrust and hatred, the economic exploitation, the social and religious discrimination of superiority complex viewing the Indians as racially inferior and culturally backward and their believe that God had created a white men to civilized the Indian.
