The main feature of basic education are— free and compulsory education for children of 7—14 years, education through craft, self supporting education, mother tongue as medium of instruction, ideal citizenship and flexible curriculum.

This system of education is flexible.

Pathshala is an education system that provides guidance to individuals of various social groups, ages or financial backgrounds.

The program had its inception with Pratham models and the national literacy mission.

In this form of education system, a flexible approach was suggested.

No printed books, no blackboards, no benches or chairs, no regular time table was the norm.

There is no need of fees, no attendance and no examinations.

Even it was an open air education system where no form of permanent structures were in place.
