The poem tells us about the lonely life of a grandfather. He is disregarded by his own children but his association with his grandchildren has kept his respect and pride intact. He is always thinking about his past life and keeps recalling good memories. His pension is not enough for his daily life expenses. When there are guests at home, he is sent to his room because they might get bored by listening to his boring old stories and also the children follow him everywhere so there's less chances of mischief. He only needs a little love and attention at this age. His grandchildren are the ones that show respect towards him and love him unconditionally. They hug him, punch him on the chest in a playful way & kiss him on his wrinkled face. They feel safe when they are sitting on his knees. They share a very lovely bond.
