The Parliament of India is the supreme bicameral legislature of India, consisting of the President of India and the two houses of the Parliament; Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
There are three major functions of the Parliament of India:
- To select the National government
- Law making
- To control, guide and inform the government
To select the National government - After Lok Sabha elections, a list is prepared of the number of MPs from each political party. For a political party to form the government, it is important for that party to have half of the members of Lok Sabha, i.e. 272 members. If a single political party is not able to get adequate seats to form the government, then other parties can come along with the majority party to form the government known as coalition government.
The Prime Minister of India is the leader of the ruling party.
Law making - All the new laws are made in the Parliament. Parliament is the supreme law making body of India. First, a law is made in both the houses of the Parliament. Then this law is passed to the Rajya Sabha. After the law being passed in both the houses of the Parliament, the law is then sent to the President for his assent.
To control, guide and inform the government - The Parliament keeps a check on the ruling party or the government through a mechanism named Question hour. By asking questions, the government is alerted to its shortcomings and gets to know about the opinions of the people through their MPs. The Opposition also plays a crucial role in the healthy functioning of a democracy. The MPs as representatives of people have a central role in controlling, guiding and informing the Parliament.
