(1)A controversial subject that no one wants to talk about is one kind of hot potato. A hot potato is an issue that makes everyone feel uncomfortable.

The phrase hot potato comes up a lot in politics.  Hot potato comes from the idea of passing a literal hot baked potato from one person to another — no one wants to be left holding it for very long, because it will burn their fingers.

example-

As the temperature drops, the refugee crisis remains Europe’s political hot potato.

Immediately, without delay, as in We were ready to pack our bags and go on vacation at the drop of a hat. This phrase probably alludes to signaling the start of a race or other contest by dropping a hat.
(3)if the ball is in someone's court, they have to do something before any progress can be made in a situationUsage notes: In a game of tennis, if the ball is in your court then it is your turn to hit the ball.I've told him he can have his job back if he apologizes. The ball's in his court now.
(4)
to fail to come to conclusion about something.
example- I am not going to beat around the bush anymore I have decided to become a lawyer
