Transpiration is a very important process for plants which creates a negative pressure gradient, that helps draw, water and minerals through the plant from the roots. This helps to keep the plant cool in hot weather; a method of evaporative cooling. Water enters the root hair cells, through osmosis; the root hair cell is hypertonic than the surrounding soil water, and means that it has a lower water molecule concentration. Water moves from cell to cell through the root cortex by osmosis (concentration gradient); each cell is hypertonic to the one before it. In the centre of the root the water enters the xylem vessels. Water moves by diffusion through the cell walls and intercellular spaces.
