demerits -

1) Rutherford's atomic model fails to explain the reasons behind stability of atom.

2)Rutherford's model fails to explain the formation of different lines in the line spectrum of atoms.

3) Rutherford compared his model with planetory system. But it is not correct because the attraction force between sun and planet is gravitational force. But It is electro static force between nucleus and electron.

merits-
1) rutherford discovered the prescence of nucleus in atom by his experiment.
2) Rutherford assumed that most of the atom is hallow and small centre point called nucleus.
3) he imagined that electrons revolve around nucleus like planets around sun.
4) In this way he got nobel prize to his discovery.

It is also known as alpha rays scattering experiment

Merits of Rutherford's atomic Model :

1. one out of 12000 rays deflected by 180°. This shows that there is a positively charged nucleus . When the particle hit the nucleus it gets deflected . The nucleus is hard and rigid

2. Electrons are present in it which revolves around the nucleus around a circular path

3. All the mass of the atom and the positive charged particles (protons) resides in the nucleus

Demerits of Rutherford's atomic model :

1. Rutherford's atomic model could not explain how the moving electrons could remain in their orbits

2. Any charged particles during acceleration would radiate energy and while revolving , it would lose its energy and eventually fall into the nucleus . This means that the atom is highly unstable.

3. But matter is composed of stable atoms. Thus the major demerit is that it would not explain the stability of atoms
