The table positions the elements sequentially, positioning elements with similar properties below each other.
Hence all inert gasses are in one column, all alkali metals are in another column, and so on. This allows a chemist to make a good guess at the properties of an unknown element. (I know that they are all documented now, but this was not the case when Mendeleev first produced his table).
