The molecular formula of ethene is C₂H₄ and its electron dot structure is given below.
- Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon that has a double bond (C = C) in its structure.
- It has 2 carbons ( 'eth' = 2 carbons). 4 hydrogens are present to satisfy the valencies of the carbon atoms.
- The carbon atoms are sp² hybridized each.
- In an electron dot structure, only the valence electrons are shown.
- The valence electrons present in ethene are due to 2 (Valence electrons in C) + 4 (Valence electrons in H).
- Total number of valence electrons = 2 X 6 + 4 X 1 = 16 electrons.
- The structure is attached below.
