Nitric acid H N O₃ :
Atomic mass of H = 1 amu, N = 14 u, O = 16 u
Total mass of a molecule = 1 * 1 + 1 * 14 + 3 * 16 = 63 amu
Sulphuric acid : H₂ S O₄ :
Atomic mass of H = 1 u, S = 32 u , O = 16 u
Total mass of a molecule = 2 * 1 + 32 * 1 + 16 * 4 = 98 u
Calcium carbonate : Ca C O₃ :
Atomic mass of Ca = 40 u, Carbon = 12 u, O = 16 u
Total mass of a molecule = 1 * 40 + 1 * 12 + 3 * 16 = 100 u
1 amu or u = 1/12th of atomic mass of Carbon 12 atom.
Generally, we add the number of protons and neutrons to get the atomic mass. The number of protons is the atomic number of the element.
