Alexander did not have to win India. He became friends with Porus after some fighting. Alexander left India for the simple reason he would have had to sacrifice a major part of his army in fighting Indian soldiers who were prepared to fight to death in the battle field. Greek soldiers were essentially mercenaries wanting to gain riches. So, they weren’t motivated to fight as hard as the Indian armies.
The other armies Alexander faced in Persia and elsewhere were not at all well equipped. Porus had a kingdom that was hardly 2–3% of Indian land mass. To say Alexander won or even engaged Indian armies is flawed to the core. This fake news has been repeated so many times, it has become a news worthy item!
Alexander took back with him many Indian scholars, especially from the University at Taxila (Takshashila). So, he clearly valued knowledge. Many great findings in Greece followed after Alexander left India. Now you know there this infusion of new thought came from.
