For addition reaction with hydrogen to take place there should be presence of either a double bond or single bond in the hydrocarbon.
There are two types of hydrocarbons in which addition reaction with hydrogen is possible -
1)alkenes (general formula- Cn H2n)
2)alkynes (Cn H(2n-2))
• Addition of hydrogen to alkene-
Addition of hydrogen to methene produces methane .
C2H4 + H2 ----------> C2H6
• Addition of hydrogen to alkene-
Addition of hydrogen to methyne produces methane .
C2H2 + 2H2 ----------> C2H6
