As an early reformer in the Long Parliament, as an instructor to Charles I and Charles II, Clarendon performed a crucial role in concluding the course of English history throughout and after the turbulent years of the civil conflicts. As a historiographer and a belletristic stylist, he authored the History of the Rebellion, commonly regarded as the prominent classical work written in England during the seventeenth century.
Clarendon recorded the original History within 1646 and 1648, which only registered events to March 1644. After his banishment, he recorded his autobiographical Life among 1668 and 1670. In 1671 he then changed the History by consolidating the Life into it and recording new sections comprising events after March 1644.
