Metals obtained by reduction process are not very pure. So they undergo refining to get their pure form and one such refining method is distillation. The metals that have low melting point and soon vapourize on heating undergo this method.Metals like zinc, mercury, arsenic undergo the method of distillation.

Gold (and mercury, though you only asked for one). Though, I’m not sure this is what you mean by “refined”.

My grandfather used mercury to reclaim the gold from the rock he mined. He amalgamated it. Then placed the amalgam into a rudimentary still that sat on an open fire. The mercury was captured (in part) by a condenser and was recycled, to be used another day. The gold was to be found in the bottom of the still
