The process in which, substances sublime is known as Sublimation. In this process, solid gets converted into vapours/gases or vice-versa, without undergoing into the liquid state. The reverse of sublimation in which gases get converted into solids is known as Deposition or Desublimation. Generally, the volatile solids undergo sublimation.

Here, are the volatile solids that undergo sublimation.

  • Ammonium chloride
  • Anthracene
  • Camphor
  • Iodine
  • Napthalene
  • Dry ice (Solid Co2)

The gaseous form, directly formed from a solid on heating, is known as Sublime. And the solid state of matter formed directly from its gaseous state on cooling, is called Sublimate. So, we can say that,

  • Dry ice sublimes, it creates a cloudy layer which is used in stages and functions for illustration.
  • The moth balls or napthalene balls that is used to repel the insects sublime after some days.
  • In winter months, Snow or frost directly get converted into vapours without coming into liquid state.
