Many protests and struggles were fought in India against social evils like race discrimination, gender discrimination, inequality, religion, etc. Many social workers and leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, the Ramakrishna Mission, the Arya Samaj etc. came forward to fight against these struggles in the society.
One such struggle led to the formation of a community called as the Tawa Matsya Sangha (TMS). The TMS was formed in 1994 in the state of Madhya Pradesh, where the fishing contract at the Tawa reservoir was given to the private contractors. The local people were pushed aside and cheap labour was taken in by the contractors. This caused a rage and the villagers came together to form the TMS to protect their rights.
After 2 years, in 1996, the MP Government declared that the fishing authority in the Tawa reservoir is given to the villagers. The TMS is now a cooperative helping the fishermen with finances, loans etc.

The building of the Tawa dam brought about the submerging of vast territories of timberland and horticultural land.
