When steam is passed over red-hot coke at a temperature of about 12000C, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is produced. Excess steam is mixed with the carbon monoxide and hydrogen and passed over a catalyst which could either be iron(III) oxide(Fe2O3) or chromium(III) oxide(Cr2O3), at a high temperature.
