The very first open university of the state – Krishna Kanta Handique Open University (KKHOU) which was set up last year opened its doors for students recently as it started its academic activities with a Bachelor's Preparatory Programme (BPP).

  • In Guwahati, Assam, India, there is a state university called Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University.
  • In 2006, it was founded.
  • Act XXXVII of 2005, passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly, founded the university.
  • The Governor gave the Act his blessing the same year.
  • Its inception year is listed as 2007, and the University Grants Commission acknowledged it in 2009.
  • KHSOU has been approved by the Former Distance Education Council, New Delhi (now DEB,UGC) via letter number DEC/Misc./07/5957 dated 03/10/07.
  • KHSOU was established in accordance with the provisions of the KKHSOU, Act' 2005 enacted by the Govt. of Assam and published in the Assam Gazette (extraordinary) dt. 29/9/05.
  • The University is also permitted to provide degrees under Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956, as stated in the University Grants Commission's letter No. F.9-13/2008(CPP-I) dated March 18, 2009.
  • Along with IGNOU, it is the sole state open university in all of Northeast India and the thirteenth of its kind.
  • Patgaon, Rani, Guwahati is where the university's main campus is.
  • As the Vice-Chancellor of this University, Prof. Srinath Baruah, a former professor in the department of economics at Guwahati University, joined the institution.
