TYPES OF IONS -

On the basis of the atomicity of a molecule, they can be divided into three categories -

2. Diatomic Ion

• The word di means two.
• The ion-containing two atoms.
• There are seven diatomic ions and are generally present in a gaseous state.

Example - $H_2, Br_2, Cl_2, I_2, F_2, O_2.$

3. Polyatomic Ion

• Formed by more than two atoms or types of atoms.
• The word poly means many.
• Example - $SO_4^2^-, NO_3^-, NH_4^+, SO_2^-.$
