The question is extremely vague. “Ancient” covers a large period of time that had varied technologies. “Communication” is also a very vague term. That being said, I will attempt to give an answer.
I am assuming that you are asking about human communication. One of the things that distinguishes humans from animals is speech. Probably the most ancient means of communication was speech. Hand gestures, body language, and facial expressions are also a means of communication. Dance and music were also very ancient means of communication.

To add to the previous answers which I totally concur with, the communication answer is hard to put an exact pin through.
The polished sword or any mirror-like copper dish, metal shield or reflective surface was used to flash a signal for strategic positional communication.
This then developed into a code of flashes, simple messages such as, for positive instructions, that were predetermined, like attack or move on or negative information such as stop or stay still.
One flash would soon have been dropped due to accidental coinciding sunshine angles!
