By far the best single-volume history of the French Revolution, Doyle's book is suitable for all levels of interest. While her sharp narrative may lack some of Shama's flair and K's warmth, Doyle is engaging, precise and precise, providing excellent insight into the material. This makes it a worthwhile purchase.Subtitled "A Chronicle of the French Revolution", this beautifully written volume covers both the years leading up to the French Revolution and the first period of the French Revolution. The book may be large, and not for the casual reader, but it is consistently engaging and educational, with a true understanding of people and events: the past really does come to life. However, you may be better off with a shorter and more focused narrative at first.This short, vivid, volume provides an excellent overview of the French Revolutionary Wars through good text, illustrations and quotes. Although lacking in military specifics, the book instead provides a strong insight into the overall historical significance of the wars, as well as basic events and a framework for further reading.
