Explanation:

HEY MATE ........

There are five main classes of secondary metabolites such as terpenoids and steroids, fatty acid-derived substances and polyketides, alkaloids, nonribosomal polypeptides, and enzyme cofactors [6].

➡️Secondary metabolites are compounds that are derived from primary metabolites.

➡️They are produced in limited quantity in later stage of plant's life. Following are few examples of secondary metabolites and their uses:

(i) Terpenoid: It gives color and flavour.

(ii) Quinoline derivatives: Used as antimalarial drug.

(iii) Vinca alkaloid: Used as anticancer drug.

(iv) Serpentine: Used to treat high blood pressure.

(v) Camptothecin: Used as anticancer and antiviral drug.

(vi) Latex: Natural rubber is obtained from it. It is used to make gloves, catheters, balloons, glues.

---------------------------------------------------------

There is no fixed, commonly agreed upon system for classifying secondary metabolites. Based on their biosynthetic origins, plant secondary metabolites can be divided into three major groups:

  • Flavonoids and allied phenolic and polyphenolic compounds,
  • Terpenoids and
  • Nitrogen-containing alkaloids and sulphur-containing compounds.
