Sodium butanoate ( sodium salt of butanoic acid ) on heating with sodalime yields propane by decarboxylation. CH3CH2CH2COONa + NaOH = CH3CH2CH3 + Na2CO3. Sodalime is a solid mixture of caustic soda and quicklime (NaOH + CaO).
