The need of a standard unit arises when we deal with people when from other places.

This is because the unit used in that place may not be used by you and you might not be familiar with it.

For example, “bigha” is used as a unit of measurement of area in India but people in other parts of the world might not be familiar with it, thus we use a common or standard unit understood to all.
