-----On moving left to right in a period the metallic character of elements decreases. This is because on moving left to right the nuclear charge increases due to gradual increase in the number of protons. This the valance electrons are pulled in more strongly by nucleus and it becomes difficult to loose electrons so the electropositive character decreases....

------On moving down the group the metallic character increases. This is because as one whole shell gets added as we move down the electrons move away from the nucleus which loosens the hold of nucleus on the electrons so the electropositive character increases...........
