There are total 7 periods in modern periodic table.
On other hand there are 18 group present in modern peridic table.
when we go left to right in periodic table
number of non metal increases thus from left to non metal character increases and metallic character decreases.
from top to bottom metallic character increases and non metallic character decreases.

In the periodic table seven period and 18 group and going to left to right the metallic character is decrease because the element need to gain the electron to gain Noble gas and we know that those element which gain the electron is categorised in non metal
