Total no. Of horizontal rows , known as periods in the modern periodic table ::- 7 periods .

Total no. Of vertical columns , known as groups in the modern periodic table::- 18 groups.

(i) metallic character moving from left to right in a period ::-

The metals(such as Na and Mg) are placed on the left of the period and the non metals(such as Cl and S ) are placed on the right of the period and semi metals or metalloids (such as Si and Ge) are in the middle of the period . So , the metallic character goes on decreasing as we move from left to right in a period.

(ii) metallic character moving down in a group.::-

The electropositivity (tendency to lose electrons) increases down the group . So, the metallic character increases down the group.

HOPE IT HELPS YOU!!
