The Cherry Tree
Once, a boy named Rakesh planted a seed of cherry tree, in one of the corner of his grandfather’s garden, in Mussoorie. As the plant was planted in the corner, it was protected from snow and wind. But as time passes, he give his concentration to the stories that were told by grandfather and reading newspaper to him. This makes him forget about the plant. Eventually the plant grows.
Winter is followed by spring. One day, as Rakesh was observing a bird he notices the plant which has grown into a twig with two leaves. He recalls the cherry tree that he had planted a year ago. He feels happy about it and shows his grandfather the plant. His grandfather says that he should take care of it and water it every day. He does as per his instruction. He watered it every day and had made a circle around the plant with small pebbles. But the plant does not grow much. This disappoints Rakesh.
Next monsoon appears and the plant grew in a fast pace. The following summer he plans to go to his parents and decides to come back by the end of monsoon. He helps his parents in sowing and planting crops. By the time he reached back to his grandfather’s house, the plant had grown up to the height of his chest. He gets more attached to the plant and waters it every day.
Once Rakesh saw an insect on the tree and does not blow it away but considered it as its first friend. Next, he saw a hairy caterpillar feeding on the leaves of the tree. Rakesh took it and placed it on some dry leaves to protect the cherry leaves. By the time he became ten, the tree had become five.
Finally, the next summer gives him the first set of fruits. But when Rakesh eats them he finds that it was sour in taste. He asked grandfather why it had happened so. He got the reply that it would become better the next time. This gave him a hope.
One fine evening, Rakesh asked his grandfather the reason for the growth of the tree. To his surprise, grandfather says that the efforts taken to nurture the plant made it special.
Rakesh admires the bark and leaves of his cherry tree. And he believes that the creator of the tree was the creator of the world, God.
