The postulate was introduced by Max Planck in his derivation of his law of black body radiation in 1900. ...Planck's postulate was further applied to understanding the Compton effect, and was applied by Niels Bohr to explain the emission spectrum of the hydrogen atom and derive the correct value of the Rydberg constant.

Postulates Of Planck's Quantum Theory

  • Different atoms and molecules can emit or absorb energy in discrete quantities only. The smallest amount of energy that can be emitted or absorbed in the form of electromagnetic radiation is known as quantum.
  • The energy of the radiation absorbed or emitted is directly proportional to the frequency of the radiation. The formula that the energy of the radiation is expressed in terms of frequency. E = h×v. where E is energy of the radiation, h is Planck's constant ( 6.626 × 10-³⁴ Joule sec ), v is frequency of radiation.
