Answer:

Phenol is an aromatic organic compound with the molecular formula C6H5OH. It is a white crystalline solid that is volatile. The molecule consists of a phenyl group (−C6H5) bonded to a hydroxy group (−OH). Mildly acidic, it requires careful handling because it can cause chemical burns.

The reaction is-

C_6H_5NH_2+NaNO2+HCl\rightarrow C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^-\rightarrow C_6H_5OH.

  • The preparation of phenol from aniline occurs in two steps as follows-
  • Aniline on reaction with sodium nitrate in the presence of hydrochloric acid forms diazonium salt of benzene.
  • This diazonium salt again reacts with dilute sulfuric acid undergoes a hydrolysis reaction to form phenol as a product.
  • The reaction is as follows-
  • C_6H_5NH_2+NaNO2+HCl\rightarrow C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^-\rightarrow C_6H_5OH.
