Answer:

Principal of Priority is a basic principle of modern plant and animal naming conventions.

Explanation:

In essence, it is the principle of allowing the first valid application of a name to a plant or animal.

They are two aspects:

  1. The first formal scientific name given to a plant or animal taxon is called the name used, a valid name in zoology, or a proper name (synonymous principle) in botany.
  2. When a name is used,  subsequent publications of that name are not valid (zoological) or validly published (botany) for other taxa.

Limitations of Principal of priority:

  • Starting dates: The Species Plantarum of Linnaeus which was published on 1/5/1753 is when the Principles of Priority started.
  • Priority is limited only up to family ranks.
  • The name given should not be outside the rank.
  • The application of Principles of Priority is always changing the names several times.

Hence, the principle of priority was in use till the binomial nomenclature came into existence.
