On the principle of rectilinear theory if light.. Which states that light travel in straight lines..
It was basically a box which had a small hole and at least two rays from the object i.e one from the top and one from the bottom would pass through the the hole in the box and produced an inverted image inside the box which could be later on be erected..

A pinhole camera works on the principle that light travels in a straight line. The image formed by pinhole camera is real, inverted and diminished in size when compared to other object. Pinhole camera are inexpensive and are easy to make. An eclipse can be viewed using a pinhole camera.
