Easterification: Easterification is the process of converting carboxylic acids to esters using acid and alcohols.

When carboxylic acid is treated with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, an ester is formed. This reaction is also called the Fischer esterification.

C2H5OH + CH3COOH --> CH3COOC2H5 +  H2O

Activity:

  • Take ethanol and glacial acetic acid along with a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid in a test tube.
  • Place them in a warm water bath for at least five minutes.
  • Pour the contents into a beaker containing water and observe the odor of the resulting mixture.
  • The resulting mixture is a sweet odored substance.
  • Ethyl acetate, an ester is formed.

This reaction is called esterification reaction.
